Clariant, a leading specialty chemical company focused on sustainability, has announced that its EnviCat? Green series catalyst will be used in a significant green ammonia project in China. The project aims to produce green hydrogen from renewable sources, which will then be converted into green ammonia—a crucial step in reducing the environmental impact of ammonia production, which is vital for applications such as fertilizer production and energy transition.
The selected catalyst from Clariant's EnviCat Green series is designed to purify hydrogen by removing trace amounts of oxygen from the feed. This deoxygenation process is essential before the hydrogen can be converted into green ammonia. The catalyst's superior gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) allows for the use of a smaller reactor, which in turn reduces both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX). "As a result, producers benefit from significant CAPEX and OPEX savings," Clariant noted.
Green ammonia is poised to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, offering versatile applications in transportation, power generation, and hydrogen supply. The carbon-free production process supported by Clariant's EnviCat Green catalyst significantly lowers the environmental footprint of ammonia, making it a key component in achieving net-zero emissions targets.
Xaver Karsunke, Vice President of Clariant Specialty Catalysts, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration in advancing sustainable energy solutions. "The success of a global transition toward sustainable energy relies greatly on the collaboration of leading industry specialists. With our extensive experience in hydrogen purification technologies, and our innovative EnviCat Green series, we are proud to contribute to this project and others that support net-zero solutions like green ammonia," Karsunke stated.
The EnviCat Green series catalyst is highly efficient in removing oxygen impurities, achieving levels as low as 5 ppmv or even 0.1 ppmv when required. Its outstanding activity and mechanical strength enable effective oxygen removal over an extended operational lifetime. Clariant highlighted that the EnviCat series has been in commercial use for over 20 years, with more than 1,000 installations worldwide across various purification applications.
