Castor oil Market Analysis

Castor Oil Market Dynamics Intelligence, Analysis, and Forecast

I. Current Market Price Dynamics
1. Domestic Market
- Domestic castor oil price range: RMB 13,500–14,200 per ton (data as of late May 2026).
- Regional variation: Prices in the East China and South China regions are generally higher than those in the Northwest and North China main producing areas, owing to concentrated demand from high-end chemical industries.
- Price volatility drivers: Castor seed raw material costs account for approximately 60% of total production cost; processing and logistics each contribute about 20%. Fluctuations in international crude oil prices—e.g., exceeding USD 90 per barrel—may push short-term prices up to RMB 16,000 per ton.

2. International Market
- Indian import quotation for castor oil: RMB 14,000–14,200 per ton (195 kg per drum, 99% purity).
- Competitive landscape: India leverages low-cost cultivation advantages, while Brazil benefits from its South American supply chain system, jointly exerting competitive pressure on China’s export market. However, the EU’s REACH regulation increasingly favors bio-based raw materials, enabling continuous expansion of China’s export share to Europe.

II. Supply-Demand Structural Analysis
1. Supply Side
- Domestic output: China’s castor oil production reached approximately 120,000 tons in 2025. Major producing regions—including Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang—have enhanced capacity via scaled-up planting models (e.g., “cooperatives + enterprises + bases”) and government subsidies (RMB 300 per mu), raising local conversion rates from 30% in 2020 to nearly 50%.
- Import dependence: Although China remains one of the world’s largest castor oil exporters, it still imports certain high-end chemical-grade products. In 2025, China exported around 120,000 tons, primarily to the EU, the U.S., and Southeast Asia.

2. Demand Side
- Overall growth: Total demand in 2026 is projected to exceed 320,000 tons, representing a 7.5% year-on-year increase, driven by:
- Policy impetus: Under China’s “dual carbon” goals (carbon peak and carbon neutrality), demand for bio-based materials has surged, expanding castor oil applications in biodiesel and sebacic acid production.
- Industrial upgrading: Green transformation in manufacturing boosts demand for high-purity, stable castor oil—e.g., in aviation lubricants and precision instrument lubrication.
- Consumer preferences: Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals collectively account for 55% of demand (pharmaceuticals: 30%; cosmetics: 25%), with notable growth in hair care, skin care, and makeup removal submarkets.

III. Key Market Drivers
1. Cost pass-through: Castor seed prices fluctuate significantly due to climate conditions and planted area changes. Drought risks in major producing regions during 2026 may elevate raw material costs, thereby transmitting upward pressure to castor oil pricing.
2. Substitution effect: Strong correlation exists between international crude oil and castor oil prices; when crude oil exceeds USD 90 per barrel, demand for castor oil—as a bio-based alternative—rises substantially.
3. Regional synergy: Northwest and North China producing regions are accelerating localized deep-processing to reduce raw material transportation costs. However, high-end products remain reliant on refining capacities concentrated in East and South China, suggesting that regional price differentials may persist long-term.

IV. Future Outlook
1. Price Trend
- Short term (Q3 2026): Prices are expected to remain within RMB 13,000–15,000 per ton. Should crude oil prices sustain upward momentum or extreme weather severely impact castor seed yields, prices may breach RMB 16,000 per ton.
- Long term (2027–2030): With continued expansion of the bio-based materials market, annual demand growth for castor oil is projected to average 6%–8%, gradually lifting the price baseline.

2. Supply-Demand Landscape
- Supply: Domestic output faces constraints from arable land availability and climatic uncertainty, limiting growth potential; import dependency is likely to remain above 30%. Low-cost products from India and Brazil will further erode China’s mid-to-low-end market share.
- Demand: Demand from high-end chemical applications (e.g., aviation lubricants, biodiesel) and consumer sectors (cosmetics, pharmaceuticals) is expected to rise to 70% of total demand, driving industry-wide transformation toward higher value-added, greener production.

3. Competitive Focus Areas
- Technological innovation: Enterprises possessing capabilities in castor cultivar breeding (e.g., drought- and pest-resistant varieties) and high-purity castor oil extraction technologies will assume dominant positions.
- Supply chain integration: Integrated models spanning “cultivation base + refining & processing + end-use application” will mitigate risks associated with raw material cost volatility.
- International collaboration: Strategic technical cooperation with India, Brazil, and other countries—aimed at jointly developing low-cost cultivation and deep-processing technologies—will be essential to enhance global competitiveness.

About Castor oil

Dehydrated castor oil is an unique drying oil, which imparts good flexibility, fine gloss, toughness, adhesion, chemical and water resistance to the dry paint film with non-yellowing properties. DCO is a very suitable and even better substitute for Linseed oil. Paints with DCO are super white and offer superior finish.Dehydrated castor oil is used as a primary binder for house paints, enamels, caulks, sealants and inks. In “cooked” varnishes it is combined with all the basic resins, rosins, rosin-esters, hydrocarbons and phenolics to produce clear varnishes and vehicles for pigmented coatings. DCO is also used in the manufacturing of lithographic inks, linoleum, putty and phenolic resins.DCO is used with phenolics to obtain fast drying coatings with maximum alkali resistance as required in sanitary can lining, corrosion resistant coatings, traffic paints, varnishes, ink vehicles, wire enamels, aluminium paint appliance finishes and marine finishes.DCO is also used to obtain fast kettling rate which gives lighter colour and lower acid varnishes.
