1,4-Dichlorobenzene Market Analysis

Market Intelligence Report on p-Dichlorobenzene – Recent Commodity Market Dynamics

I. Price Dynamics
- Regional Price Disparities: As of May 15, 2026, the quotation for p-dichlorobenzene (≥99.8% purity) in Hubei Province stood at RMB 7,200 per metric ton, while in Jiangsu Province it was RMB 12,000 per metric ton (99.5% purity), and in Shandong Province RMB 8,000 per metric ton (≥99.8% purity). Significant inter-regional price differences stem primarily from logistics costs, brand premium, and regional supply-demand equilibrium.
- Recent Price Trend: From May 1 to May 25, 2026, the national average price of p-dichlorobenzene exhibited a volatile downward trend—declining from RMB 9,340 per metric ton at the beginning of the month to RMB 8,000 per metric ton on May 25. Prices stabilized at RMB 8,000 per metric ton between May 15 and May 20; however, weakening demand toward month-end exerted further downward pressure.

II. Supply-Demand Landscape
- Supply Side: China is the world’s largest producer of p-dichlorobenzene, with total capacity reaching 291,000 metric tons and output totaling 220,400 metric tons in 2025. The East China region (Shandong and Jiangsu provinces) accounts for over 60% of national capacity, reflecting high regional concentration. Recently, several manufacturers curtailed production due to environmental compliance pressures; however, integrated enterprises (e.g., Wanhua Chemical) leverage synergies across chlor-alkali and aromatic hydrocarbon production lines, achieving notable cost advantages and strong supply stability.
- Demand Side: Downstream application structures continue optimizing. Demand share from the pesticide sector declined from 58% in 2020 to 41% in 2025, whereas pharmaceuticals (annual demand: 48,000 metric tons; CAGR: 14.2%) and electronic chemicals (procurement volume up 35% year-on-year in 2025) have emerged as key growth drivers. Although high-end applications (e.g., electronics-grade, pharma-grade) constitute only ~9% of total consumption, they contribute nearly 25% of gross profit.

III. Key Market Drivers
1. Policy Impact: Stricter domestic environmental regulations are accelerating technological upgrading. For instance, implementation of the ‘Evaluation Index System for Clean Production in the Chlor-Alkali Industry’ (2024) has prompted small- and medium-sized chlor-alkali plants—facing unorganized emission challenges—to scale back operations, concentrating chlorine resources among large-scale enterprises and thereby reinforcing their control over the p-dichlorobenzene raw material market.
2. Technological Substitution: Fluoroaromatics, nitroaromatics, and trichlorobenzenes are increasingly displacing p-dichlorobenzene in pesticide and dye applications, compelling producers to develop high-purity, functionalized products (e.g., electronics-grade, optically active p-dichlorobenzene) to sustain competitiveness.
3. International Trade: Updates to the EU REACH regulation and implementation of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) have increased export compliance costs, prompting some enterprises to shift focus toward the domestic high-end market.

IV. Analytical Assessment
- Short-Term Price Pressure: With no visible demand recovery observed in late May—and regional oversupply (e.g., subdued trading activity in Jiangsu due to relatively high quotations)—prices are expected to remain weak and range-bound. The national average price in June is forecast to fluctuate between RMB 7,800 and RMB 8,200 per metric ton.
- Long-Term Structural Optimization: Driven by robust growth in pharmaceutical and electronic chemical demand, the share of high-end products will continue rising. Enterprises possessing “green digital factories + flexible supply chains” (e.g., China National Chemical Corporation, Wanhua Chemical) will lead high-value-added segments, lifting industry gross margins from the current 15–18% to over 20%.

V. Forward Outlook
1. Capacity Expansion: Over the next five years, East China’s share of national capacity may rise to 68%, while expansion in Northwest and North China regions will be constrained by environmental regulations. Integrated enterprises—utilizing technologies such as heat integration and by-product recycling—are expected to reduce unit production costs below RMB 9,800 per metric ton, approximately RMB 1,650 lower than the industry average.
2. Technological Breakthroughs: Green manufacturing processes—including electrochemical chlorination and non-phosgene synthesis routes—are projected to reach economic viability by 2028, enabling over 30% reduction in industry carbon intensity and aligning with China’s “dual carbon” (carbon peak & carbon neutrality) goals.
3. Demand Divergence: Demand for pharmaceutical intermediates and electronic chemicals will sustain rapid growth, whereas demand in traditional pesticide and dye sectors is expected to decelerate—projected annual growth rates of +2% and ?1%, respectively—due to substitution penetration and tightening environmental policies.

About 1,4-Dichlorobenzene

The compound 1,4-dichlorobenzene is most commonly referred to as para-DCB or p-DCB. It is widely used as a moth killer, in space deodorizers, and in the production of polyphenylene sulfide. It is also used in the manufacture of certain resins, in the pharmaceutical industry, and as a general insecticide in farming. At room temperature, 1,4- dichlorobenzene is a white or colorless crystalline solid with a characteristic penetrating odor. When exposed to air, it is slowly transformed from its solid state into a vapor; the released vapor then acts as a deodorizer and insect killer. It is practically insoluble in water and is soluble in alcohol, acetone, ether, chloroform, carbon disulfide, and benzene. Its chemical formula is C6H4Cl2. There is limited evidence that 1,4-dichlorobenzene can damage a developing fetus. Exposure can damage the lungs, liver, kidneys, and blood cells, causing anemia; it can also cause swelling of the eyes, hands, and feet. It can damage the nervous system, causing weakness, trembling, and numbness in the arms and legs. It may cause a skin allergy, which when developed can cause itching and a skin rash. Higher levels of the chemical in air, such as the levels that are sometimes associated with industrial exposure, can cause headaches, nausea, clumsiness, slurred speech, and dizziness. Levels that would result in death would be associated with an odor so intense that it would be very unpleasant, if not intolerable, and would serve as a danger warning. In industrial situations, workers exposed to 1,4- dichlorobenzene at high levels are usually directed to wear respirators. Workers involved in the production of the chemical may be exposed to concentrations significantly higher than those encountered by the general population. High exposure levels may result from some consumer products of moth repellents and room deodorizers. Approximately 95% of the environmental release of 1,4- dichlorobenzene occurs during its use, rather than during its manufacture or processing.
